So, I come back to this story of resisting death by all means possible. Even if there are only two or three doors, and two big stars, Chaplin is able to put them in their place, making them act like idiots, like the rest of us – people who are simple and a bit stupid, who open and close doors. That's life, opening and closing doors. That's what he's telling us, and it's of the greatest simplicity. Like all great artists in their last works, he reaches a sort of pure line, very clear, very Japanese, moreover. It's comparable to Ozu's last film, or John Ford's. It's just a dash. It speaks of one thing: life."
